Magaluf Excursions: Carthusian

The historically and culturally rich destination is a must visit for people in Magaluf. It is located very close to Palma and Magaluf, and hence, there are practically no excuses to skip visiting this place. The property, in all, consists of an ancient monastery, a church, lush gardens, a pharmacy and of course, enchanting vistas.

This monastery was initially a home for the royal family, which then passed into the hands of Carthusian monks before becoming the home of the controversial couple, Frederick Chopin and George Sand. Today, their cell is a popular tourist spot, frequented by both, laymen and cultural enthusiasts.

Other than the monastery itself, the Carthusian’s various museums are a haven for art and history buffs. Large sections of these museums are dedicated to the famed couple but also to other memoirs pertaining to the arts and culture from the 15th to 20th Centuries. In one of the museums, you will find The Guasp Printing Press. It is one of the oldest and best preserved press of its kind, in Europe. The church of the monastery was built in mid 1700’s and boasts of a neo-classical architecture. Its lovely bell tower is decked by tiles that are soothing and green in colour. The Carthusian’s pharmacy is filled with mystical medicinal concoctions, which have been well-preserved till now. An extensive collection of Catalonian ceramic jars might also be of interest for people.

To get a taste of life and culture of those years, you must see the group "El Parado de Valldemossa," perform. The talented group puts on a show for tourists twice a week. However, if you can’t make it to the show then you should at least attend the live performance of a gifted pianist who quite aptly recreates the magic of Chopin’s compositions.
