Magaluf Excursions: Palma De Mallorca Cathedral
There are tourist destinations which you fall in love with, and then, there are hallowed grounds, which make you find your faith. The Palma De Mallorca Cathedral is definitely a part of the latter group.
Its French gothic style exudes elegance and of course divinity. It’s a short trip from Magaluf and we strongly suggest you don’t miss it. The Cathedral is set by the sea and shows itself, slowly, as you move towards it. The location seems to have fallen out of the pages of a romantic, Victorian novel.
Locally, the Cathedral is called Seo and was created on the site of an Arab mosque. Construction of the Cathedral began in 1230, under the orders of Jaime I. but the work concluded only in 1601. The highlight of the Cathedral is the port-side door, "Puerta del Mar.” Also called "Mirador portal," it was designed collectively by revered artists like Pedro de Moret, Juan de Valenciennes and Guillermo Sagrera. The artists seem to have put their soul into it. An evocative and breath-taking place, which ironically steals your breath away.
There are many enchanting parts of the Cathedral, which cannot be listed and described in brief without doing them grave injustice. It’s better to see them for yourself and dedicate a fumbling ode to them in your own mind. Prime amongst its offerings is the "Royal Chapel," over one hundred choir-stalls and “the Chapel of the Holy Trinity." The Cathedral’s Treasury is another wondrous offering. It houses a stunning array of artifacts, which are invaluable in more ways than one.
Other than history buffs, true believers and tourists from neighboring destinations such as Magaluf, the Cathedral attracts a lot of photographers. They come here looking for that perfect, illusive shot and find plenty of them here. On request, a ride on the vibrant, cheery fishing boats can be arranged too.
