Magaluf Excursions: Park of Cabrera

Cabrera is one of the largest islands in the Spanish territory and is of great natural and historical importance. It is located about 10 kilometres off the extreme southern tip of Mallorca, at Cape Salinas. It is so popular that even tourists from Magaluf devote a entire day for a trip to the park. The Cabrera archipelago is a refuge for countless migratory birds, and many rare species of flora and fauna also call it home. Its flora is mostly Mediterranean with unique local species co-existing in harmony. During migratory season, more than 130 species can be been sighted here, which makes Cabrera a bird watcher’s paradise. The Lilfords Wall lizard is perhaps the most important creature in Cabrera. The lizard is extinct in Majorca, but is often spotted on all the 19 islands of Cabrera. Other than its flora and fauna, the archipelago’s exquisite natural landscapes make it a sight to behold.

In the park’s museum you can see the remnants of Roman influence, Napoleonic wars, and many other historically important periods. It is said, that once upon a time a monastery located here was home to rebel monks who would dance naked on the beach. Maybe they moved to Magaluf later.

Besides its natural beauty, fun water-based activities also attract people to Cabrera. You can stay here for the night, go sailing, and try scuba diving amongst the majestic marine life. But since the environment here is rather fragile, you need special permits for virtually everything. Even then, a lot of islands and area will be strictly off-limits. For people who love isolation and enjoy being in-tune with nature this place will be like paradise. It’s been extremely well-preserved. Serious sailors and divers will be hard pressed to find a better place to drop anchor. The pristine, azure water and rich, vibrant marine life is simply spellbinding. Although, this is clearly a nature-lovers idea of heaven, romantic couples can also find their love rekindled here.
