Magaluf Excursions: Santuario de San Salvador

A trip to Santuario de San Salvador will be a particularly delight for those who like to walk and explore things on foot. You begin by driving in from Magaluf or Palma to Porto Colom. You abandon your rented car here and grab you walking shoes. The ascending roads that lead to the Sanctuary and its breathtaking vistas may both leave you gasping for air. You may opt for a more straightforward route that meanders between trees and leads you to the destination. Even if you are not in the best shape of your life, you won’t be overwhelmed by the climb. On your journey upwards, you will go past a charming, little chapel. This is a good place to stop for a second and maybe even atone for all your debauch fun in Magaluf.

As usually is the case, the vistas get even more spellbinding when you reach the summit, which in this case, is at over 500 meters above sea level. On a sunny, cloudless day, from here you can vividly see the mountains of Alcudia, the island of Cabrera and maybe even all the way to Minorca. Depending upon your faith, you can offer prayers inside the monastery or just walk about admiring its beautiful architecture. At the prayer room, you can leave a small ode or prayer for your family, friends and even ancestors. In complete contrast to this spiritual experience, you have a familiar, omnipresent sight - a bar and a restaurant. The Magaluf spirit is clearly never too far away. The restaurant serves good, local delicacies.

For an overnight rest or a longer stay, you can register to take refuge in the monastery. Every Sunday and on popular festivals locals flock here for a barbeque and picnic. A great way to build community spirit and family bonds. But, if you’re driving in from Magaluf or anywhere else, avoid scheduling your visit on Sunday. On this day stocked chartered buses monopolize the area.
