Magaluf Excursions: Sierra de Tramuntana Mountain Range

If you can tear yourself away from Magaluf’s nightlife then one of the places you should pay homage to is the Sierra de Tramuntana. This mountain range draws lots of people with its reputation for wonderful trails and vistas.

The mountain range spreads from Andraitx in the West to the Formentor in the North. Covering a portion of the journey on foot is highly advisable. The terrain is paved with zigzagging cobbled trails, which pass through the charmingly humble villages. If you prefer traveling with a group, then register with one of the many tour operators who organise walking tours along the mountain. On your journey you’ll come across testing terrain, intriguingly shaped olive and almond trees. During some months, the hills are filled with the fragrance of flowers in full bloom, which carpet the region. The place’s peace is occasionally broken by chirping birds and cheery cowbells. The only other thing you might hear are the words “Oh My Bleepin’ Lord!” coming from your own mouth, as you gaze at the spellbinding vistas of the deep, blue sea. All this is on offer, even before you reach the final summit.

The journey isn’t easy, but bars along the way will help you rejuvenate yourself. Cooling beverages and appetising local specialties are available in plenty here. Many important historic sites like Valldemossa and the Monastery of Lluc can be seen if you have time and can afford a short detour.

Unlike Magaluf which is flooded by tourists in summers, this mountain range is best visited after October and before May. Choose a time when spring presents the wild flowers in all their glory, and when the sun isn’t harsh enough to defeat your spirit.
